Our Sustainability & Regenerative Tourism Promise

Caring for the land, community and dark skies of Northumberland

At The Hiddle Hut, hospitality means leaving the land better than we found it. Nestled in the heart of rural Tynedale, our hideaway was created to give guests a peaceful, luxurious escape while actively nurturing the local ecosystem, supporting regional producers and honouring the heritage of our landscape.

Regenerative tourism goes beyond minimising harm. It’s about enriching our surroundings. Here is how we put that commitment into practice every day.

1. Sustainable design & ethical craft

Our hut was designed to blend into the agricultural landscape of the Northumbrian countryside, with the features and proportions of the historic Dutch barns typical of this part of the Tyne Valley.

  • Reclaimed & upcycled materials: built with reclaimed timber and furnished with restored local antiques, including a repurposed church pew and agricultural implements, giving historic pieces a new life.
  • Natural insulation: insulated with natural sheep’s wool and hemp, alongside double-glazed windows and doors and thermal curtains, keeping the hut naturally warm in winter and cool in summer.
  • Crafted locally: built by local craftspeople, with hand-built features such as our bespoke mezzanine bed and oak fittings.

2. Kitchen garden, foraging & zero-waste dining

We believe the best food comes straight from the soil beneath our feet.

  • Homegrown produce: our welcome hampers include fresh vegetables and fruit, some grown in our own kitchen garden, cut flowers, and eggs from our small flock of free-range hens.
  • Seasonality & foraging: we make our own jams, preserves and cordials from seasonal produce and wild hedgerow ingredients.
  • Local sourcing: anything we don’t grow ourselves, from local sourdough to fresh coffee, comes from small, independent businesses in Hexham, Corbridge and the surrounding valley.
  • Composting: all of our organic kitchen waste goes back into the garden beds as compost.
  • Less waste: we tell you what’s in your welcome hamper before you arrive, so you can leave out anything you don’t want, and we ask guests to take any unused food home.

3. Protecting Northumberland’s dark skies & wildlife

We are privileged to sit under some of the darkest, most pristine skies in Europe.

  • Dark-sky friendly lighting: all our outdoor lighting is fully shielded, low-lumen and downward-facing, to stop light spill and protect the night sky for stargazing and nocturnal wildlife.
  • Habitat creation: our small woodland copse and the grounds around it are managed organically, providing safe nesting areas, shelter and native food for local birds and pollinators. We garden gently so that habitats and shelters aren’t disturbed.
  • Native planting: what was once an overgrown field has been divided into three areas with native hedging, chosen to feed wildlife and native songbirds. The western part of the plot has been planted with over 100 native trees, including spruce, fir, birch, holly and rowan, creating a natural windbreak and wildlife habitat. Follow the winding path through it to the cubby seat, made from sustainable timber, and enjoy the views across the farmland and the valley to the river and woodlands.

4. Low-carbon travel & energy efficiency

We actively encourage low-impact travel to and around Northumberland.

  • EV charging on site: we have an electric vehicle charging point for guests to use.
  • Car-free exploring: we’re within walking distance of Hadrian’s Wall, The Sill and Vindolanda, and right on local cycle routes. We provide a lockable bike store, a wash-down station and trail maps so you can explore on foot or by bike.
  • E-bike hire: you can hire e-bikes locally from Hadrian Cycling to explore Hadrian’s Wall Country without a car, and we’re planning to offer our own e-bikes for guests to use in the future.
  • By train and bus: the 685 bus stops outside the property, and trains stop regularly at nearby Bardon Mill and Haltwhistle stations. We send up-to-date travel information before you arrive, and if you’re coming by public transport you can arrange a supermarket or Ocado delivery in advance, which we’ll unpack and store in the hut ready for you.
  • Mindful with resources: high-efficiency, thermostatically controlled heating with regulating radiator valves, low-flow plumbing and full-sized, locally made refillable toiletries that cut out single-use plastic. We also suggest turning the heating down if you’re out for the day.

5. Preserving local heritage & culture

Tourism should strengthen the local community.

  • Local history & arts: we encourage our guests to visit nearby heritage sites, independent shops and village pubs. The snug is stocked with books by local authors and regional guidebooks, and a growing collection of work by local artists.
  • Gentle tourism: we run The Hiddle Hut with deep respect for our home, making sure tourism here stays gentle, sustainable and good for our neighbours.
  • Supporting wildlife charities: we donate £1 from every stay to the Northumberland Wildlife Trust.

Looking ahead

  • Rainwater harvesting: in autumn 2026 we’re installing galvanised guttering and downpipes to collect rainwater from the hut roof in a 1,000-litre tank, for watering the wildlife gardens during dry spells. Water from the cold plunge is already reused in the garden.
  • Solar-powered blinds: also in autumn 2026, motorised solar-powered blinds will be fitted to the upstairs triptych window to improve shading, temperature control and privacy.
  • A roof for the outdoor kitchen: we plan to build a shelter over the outdoor kitchen so it can be used safely all year round.

How you can join us during your stay

  • Gaze & tread lightly: use the star charts, binoculars and red-light head torches we provide to enjoy the dark skies without switching on unnecessary outdoor lights.
  • Explore locally: leave the car behind for a day and follow the walking tracks straight from the door. Use public transport to reach local sites and nearby Haltwhistle and Hexham, or bring your bikes and ride to local beauty spots on the National Cycle Network.
  • Savour the season: pick fresh herbs from the deck for your cooking, or order a local breakfast hamper, grazing board, bake-it-yourself pizza pack or BBQ hamper from our local suppliers.
